I was really anxious when I showed up to register for barber school . I was excited and nervous at the same time. It was a pretty big career move, a complete 180 from what I was planning and that is why I was nervous, but I was excited because I knew that it was the best move for me.
The manager, Richard, showed me around the school and sat me down for a short interview in his office. We talked about the school and what was expected, what it would be like, and all of that. At the end of my meeting, he asked if I had any concerns or questions. I had lots of questions, but only one concern and it was, “What if I can’t learn to cut hair. I have never given one, other than a buzz to a friend in college. What if I literally just can’t cut hair?” He just smiled and quickly said, “We can teach you to cut hair. Don’t worry.” I think that is when I learned that there would be more to this job than I realized. It would be up to the school to teach me to cut hair but learning to become more than just someone who cuts hair would be up to me.
Richard was right. I learned how to cut hair and I now spend all day doing haircuts and watching others give haircuts. Sometimes I get so focused on improving my haircuts that it’s all I think about. Anywhere I go I literally look at every haircut around me, and I like it. It is fun to me. I have fallen in love with my job and the idea of mastering it.
Anyone can sign up and get through barber school, and anyone can buy clippers at the grocery store. Anyone can sit their friends down on a barstool in the kitchen, watch a couple of youtube videos and learn to give haircuts. Anyone can open a shop and put a couple chairs and mirrors in it, take people’s money, and call yourself a barber. I learned how to give a haircut in a couple of weeks, but thats not enough. I think you can learn to ‘do’ any job, but that’s not the point. Its not enough to just do your job if you want to be great. You must care to learn everything about your job, the industry, the people you work with, and be passionate about it if you want to be a master of your craft. There is so much more to barbering than just cutting hair . “We can teach you to cut hair, don’t worry.” The rest is up to me. . .
